Bobby The Lhasa Apso - Our Beloved Family Member Who Barks Loudly
Bobby, or as we affectionately call him, Bo-chan, came into our lives as a bit of a surprise—a bequest from a dear friend. He's a lively 3-year-old Lhasa Apso with a heart as big as his stubborn streak. He's still as mischievous as ever, especially when it comes to his favorite treats like chorizo sausage.
Bobby is a real cuddle bug, always finding his way onto someone's lap, though he's not above sneaking a chew on your shoes now and then. So yeah, that's our Bobby—a loyal friend and a source of endless joy.
THE PUPPY WHO LOST HIS HUMAN
Bobby entered our family's life following the passing of my mother's best friend, the previous owner of this dog. My mother had made a promise to her friend that if anything were to happen to her, she would take care of her puppy Bobby. Tragically, the old lady fell ill suddenly and passed away.
The loss was deeply distressing for all involved, and taking on the responsibility of caring for a puppy was more than the rest of the family could manage. At the beginning of Bobby's journey, his world was confined to a large pen within a house, and his exposure to the outside realm was limited to a small backyard lawn.
THE JOURNEY TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE
Honoring the promise made between friends, Bobby underwent the necessary inoculations and obtained a pet passport, preparing him for his transition from England to a new life in the foothills of the Pyrenees, located in the South of France.
Initially, Bobby struggled to adapt to his new surroundings. Accustomed only to life within the confines of a home, he found the unfamiliar noises, scents, sights, and sounds overwhelming. For instance, he became distressed upon encountering people lying down, likely triggering memories of his previous owner's illness and confinement to bed.
BERTIE AND HECTOR – THE SUPPORTING BROTHERS
During his first walk around the expansive lake surrounded by mountains, Bobby felt overwhelmed and uncertain, attempting to flatten himself on the ground due to his unfamiliarity with vast open spaces.
Thankfully, Bertie, a composed Lhasa Apso known for his unflappable nature, and Hector, the elegant Tibetan Terrier, were there to assist him. Without their guidance and exemplary behavior, Bobby would have encountered much greater difficulty adjusting to his new surroundings.
They not only showed him how to conduct himself during walks but also demonstrated proper behavior in various situations such as at the market or when encountering strangers on the street.
FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH WATER
When Bobby encountered water for the first time, he was bewildered and nervous. However, witnessing Bertie and Hector frolicking in the river encouraged him to approach, and he quickly dipped his paws into the water, curious about this unfamiliar element.
Several weeks later, Bobby developed a fondness for water activities, becoming quite the water enthusiast. Now, during the summer months, he delights in leaping into the nearby lake and wading through rivers, embracing his newfound love for aquatic adventures.
THE HERITAGE OF THE LHASA APSO BREED
Bobby was a lively little pup from the start, always eager to play and possessing a rather stubborn nature, perhaps reflecting his Tibetan heritage. Lhasa Apsos, originating from Tibet, were traditionally companions to monks in Lhasa's monasteries.
Unlike the imposing Tibetan Mastiffs that guarded the perimeters, Lhasa Apsos served as alert dogs within the interiors, known as "Abso Seng Kye" or "the Bark Lion Sentinel Dog" in Tibet. Essentially, they functioned as a spiritual form of security, alerting to any disturbances.
As one of the oldest breeds, Lhasa Apsos share a close genetic link with wolves, a trait particularly evident in Bobby. He showcases this connection by howling daily at the tolling of the local church bells at noon and 7 pm, echoing the ancient instincts of his breed.
BONJOUR POLLUX!
Now at three years old, Bobby relishes life alongside our family, filled with affection, walks, and swims. He's become accustomed to sleeping on the bed and attending the local dog training club, though his progress there is still ongoing.
In our small village, our furry companions have achieved a level of celebrity status. Bobby, in particular, receives cheerful greetings like "Bonjour Pollux!"—a reference to Dougal from the "Magic Roundabout," who happened to be a Lhasa Apso, much like Bobby.
THE HEALING POWER OF DOGS
Bobby possesses a mischievous streak, yet beneath that lies a sensitive soul marked by the scars of his traumatic beginnings. He craves cuddles and attention, which we gladly lavish upon him, understanding his need for reassurance. His presence proved to be a balm for my mother, helping her navigate through the grief of losing a dear friend.
Since relocating to France, Bobby's life, as well as ours, has undergone significant changes. He has bestowed upon our family love, loyalty, joy, and yes, those unmistakable, ear-splitting barks. Together with our other canine companions, Bobby stands as a testament to the profound healing influence of dogs.
